In the solitude of his studio during the pandemic, Sunny Jain built a collective of over fifty artists, all of whom came together virtually to create a project of transcultural scope. Phoenix Rise combines art, music, photography, food, and a belief in global citizenship by supporting social justice movements. “Artists have a long history of reflecting social movements in their work. Following the murder of George Floyd, there was a tremendous activation in the streets for Black Lives Matter. Drums supported chants, pots and pans also clanged for frontline workers, and indignation was met with empathy. The summer brought into focus the history of the United States and the systemic injustices still plaguing many different communities. The artists of Phoenix Rise decided to use our collective talents to support the Center for Constitutional Rights because of the vast amount of social justice movements with whom they stand. As a child of immigrants, I appreciate the organization’s work challenging abusive immigration policies and supporting families and communities of color. The Center for Constitutional Rights’s work also extends beyond the U.S., including a fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and gender justice across the globe. Combatting unjust laws and discriminatory treatment of transgender and gender-nonconforming people is not just an important cause for me personally, but an abhorrent violation of human rights that we should collectively work to end. As artists, we don’t see borders, but rather unity through sound and food. Phoenix Rise is for spiritual renewal and moving forward with empathy, wellness, and community.” - Sunny Jain.
CENTER FOR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS
The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) works with communities under threat to fight for justice and liberation through litigation, advocacy, and strategic communications. Since 1966, the organization has taken on oppressive systems of power, including structural racism, gender oppression, economic inequity, and governmental overreach. CCR works creatively to advance and defend constitutional and human rights so that communities and movements can not only resist such abuses as racist immigration practices, militarism and the suppression of dissent, or the criminalization of Black and Brown communities, but can build towards a world of dignity, freedom, and safety for all people. CCR has long partnered with artists who not only challenge the world we have, but help imagine the world we want to see.
